Whether you have a student with emotional problems or one with just bad behavior, here are a few steps to follow when trying to communicate with him.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Be respectful. If you don't show respect to your student, you can't ask for respect in return.
Step2
Communicate. Don't bottle your emotions. Encourage your troublesome student to talk to you when he has a problem, and make sure you do the same.
Step3
Always treat every student equally. Don't lean too hard on the ones you think need more attention, or they will resent you.
Step4
Always speak to your troublesome student calmly. Raising your voice will be seen as a sign of disrespect and weakness. Maintain the moral high ground.
Step5
If a situation becomes more than you can handle, don't be afraid to send the student to a higher authority. Instead of yelling and pulling your hair, just pass her off to someone else.
Step6
Keep your sense of humor. Don't get too bogged down in a bad teaching situation. If you're lighthearted, you'll have lighthearted students in your classroom.
Step7
Be patient. You're not going to make progress with a troublesome student overnight. It's going to take time and effort.
