Ring in the New Year for the Best of Luck
Ring in the New Year for the Best of Luck

There are a number of ways to ensure good luck in the new year. Many of these have been passed down through several generations. Try one or more and see if you don't have good luck in the new year.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Kiss someone at midnight. A no-brainer. This will ensure that your close affections and ties to loved ones will last throughout the year.

  2. Step 2

Plan for a first visitor. Also known as the "lucky bird," the first person to enter your home at the stroke of midnight will have a direct influence on your year. The superstition further dictates that the person should be tall, dark and handsome. Blonde and red-heads are bad luck and females should not be allowed in at the time.

  3. Step 3

Fill your pantries. You must not greet the new year with bare cupboards.

  4. Step 4

Pay your bills. Pay down as much debt as you can before January 1. To further guarantee prosperity, fill your wallet with cash.

  5. Step 5

Wear new clothes on New Years Day. This will increase your likelihood of more new clothes throughout the year.

  6. Step 6

Avoid breaking things on New Years Day. Again, this will continue throughout the year. It's a no-brainer.

  7. Step 7

Be neither a borrower nor a lender. Do not pay back loans or lend money or other precious items on New Year's Day.

  8. Step 8

Take nothing out of the house on the first day of the new year. This includes garbage.

  9. Step 9

Cook black Eyed Peas. This is a tradition from the South to attract good luck, prosperity and money to those eating them.

  10. Step 10

Eat Chinese food on New Years Day. I don't know how this became a tradition in my household, but I continue it with my kids to this day.
