Sometimes families are not able to take their pets to the clinic for shots, due to financial restrictions or just a lack of time. It is possible to give your pet their yearly shots yourself. The only shot not available, that must be given by a vet, is the rabies vaccination.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Vaccinations
  • Syringe
  • Someone to help
  1. Step 1

Tip the vaccine bottle upside down and insert the syringe needle into the rubber cover. Slowly pull the syringe plunger back to retrieve fluid into the syringe. Once you have all the liquid in the syringe, slowly push forward on the syringe plunger to remove excess air in the syringe.

  2. Step 2

Have the person helping you hold the pet on the floor. Hold up the excess skin on the base of your pet's neck or the excess skin toward the back upper area of the hind leg.

  3. Step 3

Stick the needle completely into the skin. Pull back on the plunger, when you do this you want to make sure that not a lot of blood enters the syringe. If no blood enters the syringe then push forward on the syringe to inject the fluid into the pet.

  4. Step 4

Remove the needle and dispose of syringe properly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Vaccinate your pets once a year.
  • If you find a lot of blood in the syringe do not inject. This is a sign of the needle being in a vein. Vaccines must be injected into tissue of animal.
