Cut flowers stay fresher longer with flower food.

Whether you bring home fresh flowers or cut them from the garden, you can add flower food to the water to have them stay fresher. Clean the container or vase thoroughly first with a bottle brush and soapy water, adding a soaking in a mild bleach solution if there are crevices you can’t reach, advises the University of California Extension. Avoid adding vinegar, aspirin or diet sodas in the container solution. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Lemon-lime soda
  • Bleach
  • Lemon juice

Instructions

      Mix 1 cup lemon-lime soda -- not the diet version -- with 3 cups of warm water and add ¼ teaspoon of bleach.

      Mix 2 tablespoons of lemon juice with 1 tablespoon of sugar in a quart of lukewarm water for an alternative version. Add ¼ teaspoon of bleach.

      Pour the flower food water into a vase and add the flowers.

      Add another ¼ teaspoon of bleach to the container every three or four days. If the container becomes cloudy, empty and wash it, trim and rinse the flower stems, and add a new mix of flower flood.
