Step 1
Monitor the cat’s diet. Sugary foods may lead to diabetes which causes bad breath and sometimes death for a cat. Meat also creates bacteria that cause bad breath. Fish, in particular, may be a bad breath culprit.
-
Step 2
Get the cat used to regular mouth examinations. The first couple of attempts to get into a cat’s mouth may be hazardous. Speak calmly to the cat and perform the examination as smoothly and as gently as possible.
-
Step 3
Examine the cat’s teeth at least monthly. Items are available online to clean a cat’s teeth. Pet owners will have to decide which one works best. It is important that the cat’s teeth be examined for foreign items and brushed on a regular basis.
-
Step 4
Watch the cat’s behavior. Exaggerated chewing motions, for example, show potential problems with teeth. Drooling and fussing with food may also be signs of mouth issues. Make note of these actions.

Step 5
Take the cat for regular visits to the vet. Health issues, like cancer, kidney disease and diabetes may manifest themselves in bad cat breath. Make sure a thorough examination is performed and any possible tests for these particular diseases are performed.
