Laws have changed in the recent years and crossing into Mexico is not as easy as it used to be. In fact it can be downright tortuous if you're not prepared, or in a hurry. Even though the crossing has never been the same the 7 or 8 times we've gone, we still have an idea of what to do. Be sure you have the right paperwork and knowledge and you'll be good to go.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • your own car
  • Mexico importation visa
  • driver's license or passport
  • copies of all important documents
  • legal snacks (chips, water, etc)
  • patience
  • tourist visa

Step1
Make sure you have the proper documentation. You need an importation visa for your car. This can be obtained at the border but it's easier to do so online beforehand. Reference this article for more information on the importation visa. http://www.ehow.com/how_2138316_mexican-importation-visa-car.html
Step2
For yourself and your traveling companions you will need valid ID. As of November 2007 a birth certificate or driver's license is enough. As early as June 2008 the requirements will become more strict and you will need a US passport or the equivalent.
Step3
Here we come to the border. Looks like the line's not long, at least today. If you have not gotten a tourist visa at a Mexican consulate, you will need to get one once you arrive at the border. Usually they will wave you through the inspection, inspect your car, and then you can get out and walk to the office. Depending on the border crossing it may be very easy to find or very difficult. Do your research to find out how to do this at your crossing.
Step4
Just get in the right lane. It's easy, see? Once you have all your papers in order, travel into Mexico and enjoy your trip. You may encounter military checks but just stay in your car and do what they ask you to do. It will all be fine.
Step5
Look! We're finally halfway over the bridge after 2.5 hours! What amazingly fast progress. Depending on the time of year when you are coming back into the United States, the border will either go very quickly or VERY slowly. Be prepared for up to a five hour wait. Have enough gas and water and snacks for a long wait. You will go through Mexico's border, where you turn in your importation visa for your car, and then through the US border, which is a very thorough check of papers and your car. They will throw away pork products and plants that they find. Be patient, declare your items that need to be declared, and soon you will be on your way back home.
