Winter is a great time for kids to get out and play. There is perhaps nothing better than snow sledding, skiing, and building snowmen. However, with the extreme temperatures and the winter sports, you have to take steps to ensure the safety of your kids when they go outside. The following are helpful tips to keep your kids safe when the temperatures drop.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Coat
  • Hat
  • Boots
  • Gloves
  • Sunscreen
  • Moisturizing lotion

Step1
Keep an eye out for extreme drops in the temperature so you can prepare your child for being outside. You might even need to keep your kids inside, if the weather is dangerously cold.
Step2
Find a good quality coat that fits well. Avoid winter coats that are too baggy or too small. Make sure that there are no strings or other attachments to the coat that can cause strangulation or get caught on tree branches or other things while playing. You might even want to consider a bright colored coat that can be seen well.
Step3
Good mittens or gloves are essential for winter safety. Kids need gloves with insulation when playing outside. Also consider purchasing gloves that are waterproof, especially if playing in the snow.
Step4
Hats should always be worn in cold weather. The hat you choose should cover your child's entire head, and even have flaps that cover the ears.
Step5
If your kid is playing out in the snow, look for protective snow boots that are well insulated. Make sure the boots fit your child properly, as boots that are too big can cause your child to fall repeatedly in the snow.
Step6
Skin protection is important in the wintertime. Your child's skin is very susceptible to dryness, as well as sun rays and windburn. Use sunscreen on your child's face, including the lips. Apply liberal moisturizing lotion to your child's skin after being outside for an extended period of time.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sun rays can still burn sensitive skin. Use SPF 15 or higher on your kids in the winter.
  • A scarf can provide extra warmth around your child's neck.
