How to Search for Customers by Name in Quickbooks

In Quickbooks it seems that it should be easy to search for, of all things, a customer's name. Unfortunately, for users of Quickbooks versions prior to the 2007 edition, this is just not possible. While the company name is searchable, the individual contact's name was not. This article will explain how to find which company a customer works for by performing a simple search.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Copy of Quickbooks 2007 or higher.
  • Google Desktop

Step1
Install your Quickbooks version 2007, 2008, or higher. When prompted with the decision of whether or not to install and integrate Google Desktop, choose to do so. Once the install is complete, Google Desktop will begin indexing your entire PC.
Step2
Launch the Quickbooks program and find the button labeled "search." This should be found at the top of the screen. Press the "search" button and you should be presented with a screen with the caption "Quickbooks search powered by Google Desktop."
Step3
Type the name of the person whom you would like to locate, for instance, "John Smith." Click the button labeled "Search Quickbooks." The results may include many companies, but the name that you searched for will be listed in bold. This makes finding specific users much easier than ever before.

Tips & Warnings

  • This search works with Quickbooks 2007 and newer versions.
