How to De-skunk a Dog

If your dog (or other pet), meets a skunk, a simple bath won't remove the odor.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Mix one quart of Hydrogen peroxide with one tsp of baking soda and one tsp of Dawn dish soap in an open bowl or bucket.

  2. Step 2

    Scrub the affected area thoroughly. Use rags to get the fur totally cleaned.

  3. Step 3

    Wait five minutes.

  4. Step 4

    Rinse. Use warm water and remove all the chemical solution.

  5. Step 5

    Repeat until affected area is thoroughly rinsed through.

Tips & Warnings
  • Warning: Do NOT use a closed container, as this mixture is explosive when confined.

on 12/19/2008 Good advice, but be sure to rinse with COOL water, not warm. The cool water will tighten the dog's skin. Warm water will cause the pores of the skin to open, allowing more of the stinky oil to seep in.
