Look at this huge mess!
Firstly you will need to hold the item in one hand, and make a phone call with your other hand. It helps if your house is already a mess.
Step2
This sure is a big mess...
As you talk to your friend on the phone, wander aimlessly about the house, putting things away, opening and closing drawers, and picking up and putting down things.
Step3
Logic has nothing to do with it.
Be sure that you don't sit down, or think too much about a logical place for your item.
Step4
Keep wandering around for about 20-25 minutes. At some point in this journey, look and find a "very safe place" for your item. Set it there, out of sight, and continue wandering and talking on the phone.
Step5
At this point you will be good and confused. Go ahead and sit down. Don't try to look for your item for about a week. I can almost guarantee it will be good and truly lost.
Tips & Warnings
If you want to lose two items at once, try having the TV on as well.
It's important to be very distracted. No focusing or thinking allowed.

This really works! I know; I do it all the time. Another way is to put it in a place where it can be easily found later. I have found this to be a wonderful way to lose something.
