How to Abide by Freecycle's Rules and Etiquette

Freecycle has a set of general rules created to ensure the group runs smoothly and stays on track. This means things like advertising are prohibited, along with anything that would make the group non-PG rated. When joining a group such as Freecycle, it's important to keep in mind the pre-established rules and etiquette, as violating them can get you banned not only from the present group you belong to, but from future groups as well.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Keep the group PG-rated. Freecycle's rules and etiquette established from the beginning that the group is family-oriented. This means that pornography (in the form of links, offers or even comments) and swearing are both a big no-no. Breaking this rule is one of the easiest ways to get banned from the group permanently.

  2. Step 2

Do not offer anything that minors should not be allowed to have. This is another of the basic regulations of Freecycle's rules and etiquette. To abide by it, avoid giving away anything related to tobacco, alcohol and drugs (including over the counter medicine).

  3. Step 3

Stay away from firearms and knives. Not only are they prohibited by Freecycle's rules and etiquette, but you may run into legal trouble by offering them to members of the group without the proper authorization.

  4. Step 4

Abide by the "be nice" rule. This means no personal attacks, rudeness and arguments. If you have a problem with somebody, try to resolve it amicably. If you feel attacked, contact the group's moderator. It's their job to ensure everything runs smoothly for all members.

  5. Step 5

Avoid controversial topics such as religion, politics, abortion, etc. The group is not the right place to proselytize, debate or meet like-minded friends. If you want to talk about these issues, you should look somewhere else.

  6. Step 6

Abide by the "no-trading" policy. Freecycle is about giving away things you no longer need, no strings attached. If you want to work out a barter or if you are looking to benefit from your own items, this is not the right group for you.

Tips & Warnings
  • The group operates on a "two strike" rule. This means you will be given a warning the first time you do not abide by the rules and automatically banned on the second offense.
  • If you see something you like, always answer directly to the person offering an item, rather than to the whole group. This helps keep the list cleaner and limits the number of emails people get on an everyday basis.
