How to Buy Tree-Trimming Equipment

Selecting the right tree trimming equipment will depend upon your experience and physical ability. While it might seem that a chainsaw may be the quickest and easiest way to approach the job, such power tools can be equally dangerous to both humans and trees. For the best overall results, handsaws and pole saws should be purchased, along with various climbing accessories.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Buy the right type of tree saws according to your experience and physical ability when it comes to trimming trees. If you are able to climb the tree or rent a cherry picker, you can choose from a variety of handsaws with high-quality blades that can cut through relatively thick branches with ease. If you plan to trim your tree from the ground, you should buy a pole saw with an equally competent blade.

  2. Step 2

Choose hand pruners, loppers or landscaping shears to remove smaller branches and newer growth. These smaller types of pruning equipment are more effective in shaping and trimming trees, especially the tops, for a more aesthetic presentation. In addition, these tools can be used to cut up downed branches for easy disposal.

  3. Step 3

Investigate hydraulic tree-trimming equipment, such as circular saws, chainsaws and loppers. These types of tree trimmers are easier to handle than their gasoline-powered counterparts, and run cooler as well. While the price of hydraulic tools can be fairly expensive, this might be a good investment if you need to trim a large amount of trees on a regular basis.

  4. Step 4

Purchase the right type of rigging and tree-climbing equipment, such as harnesses, ropes and climbing kits, if you plan on scrambling up the trunk of the tree yourself. Remember, however, that most of this equipment is designed for the experienced arborist, and you may need to be trained before use.

  5. Step 5

Find the right tree trimming equipment at a local arborist store, or use online resources, such as Wes Spur, to buy your saws, climbing gear and accessories (see Resources below). Many of these websites also sell instructional books and video so that you can learn how to trim trees safely and effectively.

Tips & Warnings
  • You should invest in a leather sheath for your handsaw. Choose one that clips onto your belt so you can keep both of your hands free while climbing a tree.

on 3/23/2009 Really, when it comes down to brass tacks, there’s only one place to go for industrial tree removal equipment. Landmark Machinery (http://www.landmarkmachinery.com) services the entirety of central Michigan for any stump grinder or brush chipper needs. They have great prices on lightly used equipment ranging from tub grinders to industrial trailers and tractors. It’s a very competitive business here in Mount Pleasant, but there’s only one place that’s reliable and dependable for all of your needs, and that is Landmark Machinery. I’ve been doing business with them for a number of years, and can only give them the highest of recommendations. The next time you’re on the lookout for an industrial stump chipper, Landmark Machinery is the answer for you.
