The graphics capabilities of the current generation of PCs and Macs allow users to expand their design possibilities. You can create animated shorts and interpret your favorite paintings with some computer memory and design software. It is possible to make 3-D wallpaper for your computer to show off your artistic prowess on a daily basis.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Updated graphics software

Step1
Set dimensions for your 3-D wallpaper to meet your computer's resolution restrictions. A good set of dimensions for editing purposes and most computers is 800 x 800 pixels, which can be changed in the "Main Menu" of your graphics software.
Step2
Create a base layer of designs and colors that will help create the illusion of 3-D in your wallpaper. You should set the foreground and background colors of this base layer to provide a contrast that is fundamental to deceiving the viewer's eye.
Step3
Utilize the filtering tools in your graphics software to make abstract shapes that allow you to make simple 3-D designs. These tools allow you to spread, swirl and contour images, which helps differentiate the base layer from the top layer of your wallpaper.
Step4
Establish another layer of colors in a separate screen of your design program for differentiation from your base layer. This layer should have lighter colors and a unique design from the base level.
Step5
Insert distortions, ripples and tears within the top layer of your 3-D wallpaper using advanced filter options. The swirl and blurring tools in most design suites allow you to separate one level from another in subtle ways.
Step6
Play around with the level of detail in your top layer of wallpaper as a way to blur parts of your background. Negative numbers for detail are ideal if you want to make parts of your base layer pop out through the top layer.
Step7
Add 3-D geometrical shapes that move from your base layer to your top layer to make your image stand out. You can click on a shaping tool in your software and extend the shape from the base layer through the top layer in a way that looks as if it is coming out of the screen.

Tips & Warnings

  • Locate photo editing and graphics software that allows you to save projects in the JPEG file type. JPEG files are easier to transfer to PC and Mac desktops and edit at a later point than other file types. You can use library or office computers to complete 3-D wallpaper and transfer the image file to a Flash drive for use on your computer.
