Hispanas Organized for Political Equality, also known as HOPE, offers the Leadership Institute as a way to educate Latina businesswomen and professionals about the political issues and concerns that face Hispanic communities all across California. When you decide to attend the HOPE Leadership Institute for Latinas, you will be enrolling in a program that will teach you how to create political change within your neighborhood.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Application for admission into the Leadership Institute
  • 5 years of experience as a leader in the Hispanic community
  • Residency status in California

Step1
Satisfy the requirements to be accepted into the HOPE Leadership Institute for Latinas program. You must reside in California and be a recognized Latina leader in your community with at least 5 years of experience in either business or public service. Only 25 Latinas will be selected for each 10-month program based upon the strength of each application.
Step2
Find out if you have the flexibility in your schedule to attend the HOPE Leadership Institute for Latinas, which is located in Sacramento, California. The program lasts from January to October each year, and involves 5 seminars that last from 3 to 5 days each. In addition, you will be required to participate in projects in your community outside of the seminars.
Step3
Commit to the program completely by satisfying all admission requirements, and by pledging that you will participate in each aspect of the program. If you are unable to attend all of the seminars, including the Latina Action Day that is held every April in Sacramento, you should probably allow someone else to fill your place in the Leadership Institute.
Step4
Apply to the HOPE Leadership Institute for Latinas by logging on to its official website (see Resources below). You will also be able to learn more about all of the programs that HOPE employs in Hispanic communities all across California.
Step5
Attend all of the seminars and conferences during the 10-month process. The HOPE Leadership Institute for Latinas is a combination of academic seminars, lobbying, advocacy work and specialized programs out in the Hispanic community, field trips and other types of academic training. The graduation ceremony takes place in Washington, D.C.

Tips & Warnings

  • Latina Action Day, which takes place every April, is a chance for the membership of HOPE's Leadership Institute to offer input to the governor before the state budget is approved in May.
