How to Fight Against Workplace Discrimination

In addition to being illegal, discrimination in the workplace can make for a very hostile work environment, not just for the person being discriminated against, but for all employees. Ideally, employers should have anti-discrimination policies in place which can be used to help employees, but if discriminatory behaviors are subtle instead of blatant, policies can be hard to enforce. However, employers and employees alike can take steps to fight discrimination in the workplace.

Instructions

    • 1

Speak up when something makes you uncomfortable. Many of us don't like to hear prejudicial or off-color jokes, but few of us actually let the speaker know that we are offended. Tell your coworker you think his joke was inappropriate and that you would prefer he refrain from making such comments in the future.

Perform above and beyond what is expected of you. The best way to fight any battle is to be prepared. Staying positive, professional and productive decreases your chances of being discriminated against if you are a member of a protected class. It's hard to legitimately deny a raise or promotion to an exemplary employee.

    • 3

Check in with your supervisor if you think other, less-qualified coworkers are progressing up the workplace ladder before you. It may not be discrimination--there may be areas in which you need to improve your work. However, if the reason is due to discriminatory practices, your questions will alert your supervisor that he needs to look into the situation.

    • 4

Join or start a diversity mentoring and recruitment program. Ask minority employees in higher positions for advice about how to progress in your career and pass that knowledge on to others when you do move forward. Similarly, work with your employees or employer to create strategies to actively recruit candidates who can do the job well and add diversity to the workplace.

    • 5

Fight the winning battles. If, despite your best efforts, you find that your workplace is rampant with discrimination, it may be a sign that you're not in the right place. That's not to say you shouldn't file a claim if you've been discriminated against, but you may want to consider whether you need to look for a more positive, diverse work environment.

Tips & Warnings

  • Set a good example. Employers in particular need to be sure they are living up to the same expectation placed on their employees. Pay close attention to your own words and attitudes toward protected classes.

  • Workplace discrimination is not something you should have to endure. Contact your affirmative action officer to initiate an internal grievance if you are experiencing ongoing discrimination.
