How to Use Acupuncture to Treat Bedwetting

While the benefits of acupuncture have received much attention, you may not know that this procedure may effectively treat bedwetting. Acupuncture is the process of inserting long, thin, stainless steel needles into specific points on the body to increase energy flow from certain organs.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check your health insurance policy to see how much of your treatment, if any, will be covered. Some health insurance companies consider acupuncture an alternative medicine treatment. For this reason, they may not agree to cover it.

  2. Step 2

Provide the acupuncturist with information about your condition and medical background. The practitioner will want your complete profile to help you get the best use out of your treatment.

  3. Step 3

Learn the points on the body where the needles will be inserted. For bedwetting, the needles should be placed in spots affecting the spleen, kidneys and lungs.

  4. Step 4

Seek the help of a trained and certified acupuncturist in performing acupuncture. Consult the American Academy of Medical Acupuncturists to find a professional near you (see Resources below).

  5. Step 5

Learn what the acupuncture treatment will be like. Treatments vary widely based on practitioner, training and expertise.

  6. Step 6

Undergo a thorough physical exam. The practitioner will use this exam to discover any other conditions that you will need to treat.

  7. Step 7

Rest facedown in a comfortable position during the acupuncture session.

  8. Step 8

Monitor your diet. When you use acupuncture, do not expect it to work without proper herbal and nutritional supplementation. A professional acupuncturist will help you to determine what kind of nutritional support you will need to treat bedwetting.

Tips & Warnings
  • Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) involves water metabolism, which is affected by the lungs, spleen and kidneys. According to TCM, when any of these organs are energy deficient, bedwetting can occur.
  • Many types of acupuncture have been studied for their effectiveness in stopping bedwetting. One studied method is Korean Hand Therapy. Read more about it at Acupuncture Today (see Resources below).
  • Expect to feel a tingling or relaxed sensation when the needles are inserted.
  • Infection can occur when needles are reused. Always be sure your acupuncturist is using disposable needles. This practice is mandated by law.
