How to Use Aromatherapy to Treat Postpartum Depression
Feeling overwhelmed and sad a few days after the birth is usually described as the "baby blues." There are several ways to treat this kind of low mood, including aromatherapy. If your depression lasts for more than 3 weeks and begins to affect your daily life, you may have a more serious form of postpartum depression (PPD), which should be treated by your physician.

1
Speak to your doctor about symptoms that may be related to PPD. These include crying, having trouble sleeping, loss of appetite, feeling overwhelmed and not being able to concentrate. He can help you determine whether this feeling will pass in a few days or he may recommend medical treatment.

2
Tell your partner how you are feeling and arrange for some time by yourself, without the baby. Reduction of stress, along with aromatherapy, can help you feel better.

3
Use a few drops of essential oils in a warm bath. Essentials oils such as sandalwood, citrus and especially lavender can produce a calming effect. Relax and let the delicate scents treat your anxiety and improve your mood.

4
Go to a spa or salon for an aromatherapy massage. If you cannot go for a professional massage, ask your spouse to give you one at home. The tension in your muscles may lessen and help you sleep, which can help lift your mood.

5
Light aromatherapy candles in your favorite scent. The scent permeating throughout your home can calm you down and lessen your depressive mood. Use candles only when you plan to be awake to avoid accidents or fires.
-
6
Tuck aromatherapy sachets under your pillow to help induce sleep. Use dried lavender flowers, a pretty, nonporous fabric and a needle and thread to make your own.

Tips & Warnings
Aromatherapy alone will not effectively treat severe postpartum depression or postpartum psychosis. These serious conditions may require prescription medication and hospitalization. If you have no interest in bonding with your baby, are consumed with thoughts of suicide or think about harming your child, call your doctor immediately.
