Step1
Speak with your trainer to determine what your training goals are, and make a list of the training equipment necessary to achieve these goals. Because tack can be very expensive, it's often a good idea to rank the equipment in order of necessity. What items do you need today to work with your horse? What can you put off purchasing for a few months? A year?

Visit your local tack shop and browse their selection. Tack shop employees know their inventory and can steer you to the correct equipment.

Choose basic tack that you'll use over the lifetime of your horse, such as saddles and bridles, in the highest quality leather you can afford. You want this equipment to last a long time and hold up through heavy use.

Always select the mildest bit that your horse will go in. A single- or double-jointed snaffle is an excellent choice for any discipline. Look for a bit with a copper or mixed-metal mouthpiece.
