Things You'll Need:
-
Step 1
Measure the circumference of the rider's head with a clothing measuring tape. The tape should circle around the forehead and above the top of the ears. Don't pull the measuring tape too tight on the rider's head, or you'll get an incorrect measurement.
-
Step 2
Look up the measurement with the corresponding helmet sizes. Remember that hat sizes are different for men and women. Take a note of the corresponding helmet size for reference when you're shopping. Some helmets provide sizes based on head circumference, while others provide measurements based on hat sizes, so get both numbers as you look for a helmet. These numbers are still helpful when the choices are small, medium, large and extra large.
-
Step 3
Go to a brick-and-mortar store to try various riding helmets on to check the fit. Even if you plan to order online, try at least a few helmets on in person to determine the right fit for your head.
-
Step 4
Rock your head from side to side or move the helmet with your hands to test its fit.
-
Step 5
Adjust the interior lining, if possible, for a better fit.
-
Step 6
Attach the chin strap to check the comfort level. Purchase helmet covers to protect the original finish of a helmet, or to change the color of a helmet quickly.
