Your needs for trail running shorts may differ slightly in comparison with normal running shorts. Trail running combines hiking and long-distance jogging and features a rugged terrain that provides a higher risk of injury. Therefore, good trail running shorts should offer both comfort and protection from the elements. They also should offer features to assist you during longer treks.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Select trail running shorts that are made of a wicking material that will absorb perspiration and keep your skin dry and cool while you run. To provide this comfort, your trail running shorts should combine an outer layer composed of a polyester blend with an inner mesh lining, usually made from nylon.

  2. Step 2

Choose trail running shorts that feature a fuller cut with longer legs. A loose-fitting pair of shorts will protect your body from brush and rough terrain, and longer legged shorts will maximize that protection. A larger cut may also reduce insect bites.

  3. Step 3

Opt for a small pocket. This will be an excellent way to store car keys, your identification and some cash during your trail run. A small pocket will keep these additional items from banging against the side of your leg while you run.

  4. Step 4

Find trail running shorts for cross-training activities. Many of these shorts have been designed for use on the tennis or basketball courts as well as the hiking trail. With their longer length and functional pockets, these shorts also are stylish enough for casual wear.

  5. Step 5

Purchase a pair of trail running shorts with additional pockets, usually along the sides of the legs, if you are going to run on a trail longer than 20 km. The extra pockets mean you can carry additional items such as sunscreen, sunglasses and a water bottle without having to resort to a small backpack, which can weigh you down.

Tips & Warnings
  • Select a pair of knit boxers to wear with your trail running shorts. The longer legs of this type of underwear will reduce the chances of it "riding up" while you are running on the trail.
