How to Apply to a Technical Institute

At a technical institute, you can sharpen your current skills set or prepare for a more prosperous tomorrow by learning a new one. While the exact application procedure will vary, depending on the school and the program you're interested in, there are steps you can take to give your application a boost.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Make a list of technical schools you want to apply to by researching the schools in your area that offer the program you're interested in. Compare tuition costs as well as class sizes and the reputations of the schools. Learn more about the success rate that graduates experience once they've earned their diplomas.
Step2
Request an application package from each school. You can usually do this online or by calling the department that administrates the program to which you want to apply.
Step3
Look over each application closely. Every technical institute will have its own application requirements, so don't expect that you'll necessarily need to supply each one with the same information. Read all items regarding application policies and procedures closely, paying particular attention to deadlines.
Step4
Provide each and every bit of required information to the technical institute. If you have any questions or if you're unclear about any items, contact the admissions office or the department. It's better to be sure than it is to submit incorrect information and have it ruin your application.
Step5
Ask the school when you can expect to hear back from them. Some schools have tiered admissions procedures, wherein they cut a certain percentage of the applicants and notify the remaining applicants that they're still being considered. Contact the department if you have any concerns about policies.

Tips & Warnings

  • Talk to former students. An accredited school with a solid reputation will generally be happy to provide interested applicants with the names of students who can testify to the program's quality. Call the department that offers the program you're interested in to learn more.
