The path to becoming an engineer will take you through at least 4 years of college. But before you apply to an engineering school, you should do your due diligence to make sure you spend your education dollars wisely.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Learn the academic requirements for engineering programs at a variety of schools. Determine which schools you have a reasonable shot of getting into with your grades and standardized test scores.
Step2
Request that the college send you information on its engineering program. You can call the school's engineering department directly. Engineering program information can also be acquired through your high school guidance office.
Step3
Look over the academic calendars of the various engineering schools you want to apply to. Keep in mind that there are many specialized branches of engineering, and some schools may offer more opportunities for you to focus on your area of interest.
Step4
Make a short list of schools to which you want to apply. Consider the quality of the program, the school's reputation, annual costs and the school's location relative to your home.
Step5
Consult each school's academic calendar, or the engineering department, to determine the application deadline. You can also coordinate this through your high school guidance office, if you have yet to graduate. Remember that many colleges offer an early deadline and a final, or late, deadline, and that candidates can receive early admission or late admission.
Step6
Submit your test scores, grade reports, letters of recommendation and any other application materials specified by the college by the deadline. Give yourself time leading up to the deadline to make sure you have everything in place.
Step7
Remain in contact with the school while you wait for your application to be evaluated, if you have any questions about the procedures used to determine which applications are accepted and which are not. You'll also be notified of the date by which you can expect a decision.

Tips & Warnings

  • The application process for getting into top engineering schools is highly competitive. In addition to achieving top grades, you can distinguish yourself from the field of competition by adding extracurricular or volunteer activities to your resume.
