Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Decide which aspects of business interest you, and focus on those particular subjects. A student of business should carefully review all components of a business model, such as financing, accounting, banking, global economics and marketing. At the same time, you may want to concentrate on issues more in line with your personal goals, such as business plan implementation, small business strategies or local advertising trends.
Step2
Concentrate on business subjects that you genuinely enjoy. Studies have shown that businesses tend to be more successful when their owners love and believe in their goods and services. This type of attitude will directly affect your ability to teach yourself business.
Step3
Teach yourself about business by learning from the ground up. Many successful executives started in entry level positions, often as interns, which helped them to observe every aspect of a particular business. By being thoroughly knowledgeable about your business, you will eventually earn the respect of your employees.
Step4
Attend self-contained courses at a local university or community college to teach yourself business. Some colleges will offer business programs to non-students for a nominal fee, and any classes you take may be applied toward a degree in the future. In addition, these courses may be offered online, via a local public access cable television station or through materials that can be sent back and forth in the mail.
Step5
Read books that have been designed to teach novices about business. Choose a variety of approaches, from the "Idiot's Guides" that appear in a simple, easy-to-read format, to college-level textbooks that provide an in-depth look at the principles of economics, finances, banking and accounting.
Step6
Use online resources to teach yourself about starting your own business, such as the My Own Business website (see Resources below). These websites offer specific learning modules that match your own business plans and strategies. They also offer plenty of resources to further your education about the world of business and finance.
