A wine cellar give you a place to store valuable wines and spirits, and can enhance the value of your home by giving it an elegant upgrade. One of the most important features of any wine cellar is its door.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Prefabricated or bespoke door
  • Climate-control door (if needed)
  • Bottom sweep
  1. Step 1

Complete construction on your wine cellar. The size of your wine cellar will have an effect on how you build the door. When you design your wine cellar and door, take into account the dimensions of the wine cellar as well as the dimensions of the surrounding structure of your home.

  2. Step 2

Measure the dimensions of the portal leading into the wine cellar. Conversely, you can opt to buy a prefabricated door ahead of time and design your wine cellar's entrance around it. This is the easiest method for building and installing a door.

  3. Step 3

Determine whether your wine cellar needs a climate-control door or whether it can get away with a simpler standard door. If your wine cellar needs a climate-control device (like a humidifier and a refrigerant of some kind), then a climate-control door is a necessity to prevent the loss of atmosphere control.

  4. Step 4

Install a bottom-sweep to the door, an important aspect of climate control. The bottom-sweep creates a contact between the bottom of the door and the floor, preventing loss of moisture or air conditioning.

  5. Step 5

Invest in double-pane glass. Double-paned windows are useful not just for making the contents of your wine cellar visible, but also for adding an additional level of protection for your wine cellar door.

Tips & Warnings
  • It's possible to build a wine cellar in a space smaller than a full-size room. If you don't have a particularly large home but still want to build a display area for your wines, then a closet or even a pantry could work just fine.
  • Don't think that just because you build a wine cellar in your basement you can get away with not having a sturdy, climate-control door to seal it. Your basement may keep your wines at an ideal temperature, but if it is too dry or too damp, you may still do irreversible damage to your wines.
