If you enjoy the taste of tuna rolls but hanker for a stronger flavor, considering making spicy tuna rolls. With a few simple changes to the recipe for a basic tuna roll, you can offer your guests their choice of flavors without creating much extra work for you.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Raw sushi-grade tuna
  • Scallions
  • Chili oil or Sriracha sauce
  • Nori
  • Sushi rice

Prepare the Spicy Tuna for Your Rolls

Step1
Dice the tuna into small cubes using a sharp knife and cutting board. Continue to chop the tuna into finer pieces.
Step2
Add chopped scallions to the tuna. Continue to chop the mixture of scallions and tuna. This will help ensure that the scallions are thoroughly mixed with the tuna when you start to make the rolls.
Step3
Combine the chili oil or Srirasha sauce with the chopped tuna. Sriracha sauce will have a flavor that has traces of garlic, but using it will result in a looser mixture of tuna. Use a spoon or pair of chopsticks to ensure that the ingredients are mixed evenly.

Package Spicy Tuna in Different Types of Rolls

Step1
Decide how you would like to serve the spicy tuna. Since the spicy tuna is finely chopped, you can make it into hand rolls, ship rolls or outside thick rolls. You may want to experiment with different types of rolls to see which is easiest for you to make and which you and your guests most enjoy.
Step2
Combine the nori and sushi rice based on the type of roll that you are making. Ship rolls involve using sushi rice to create a small base which is surrounded by a thin strip of nori, while hand rolls are made by placing a ball of sushi rice on a half sheet of nori and adding the fish to that. Outside thick rolls are made by lining a sheet of nori with a thin layer of sushi rice and wrapping it so that the rice is on the outside of the roll.
Step3
Add the spicy tuna to the nori and rice.
Step4
Wrap the roll. If you are making hand rolls or ship rolls, you may have enough spicy tuna to prepare multiple rolls for serving.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you prefer a creamy texture to the spicy tuna rolls that you make, you can use Japanese mayonnaise instead of chili oil or Sriracha sauce.
  • You can divide a single sheet of nori into pieces to make one ship roll and two hand rolls.
