1
Invest in a set of eyeshadow brushes. Look for a medium-sized brush (no bigger than the tip of your thumb) for the lid and a smaller, firmer brush for the crease of your eye. You can also use a thin eyeliner brush to apply a line of shadow near the lower lashes for a smoky look.
-
2
Select an eyeshadow color combination. Think of colors that complement your skin tone or go for something that matches your outfit. Try to choose at least three colors of varying intensities that mesh together well.

3
Use an eye primer. Use your fingertips to pat primer over the entire lid, leaving the upper area blank. A good primer helps to even out skin tone and it also helps to set eye shadow. If you can't afford a primer, use your foundation or concealer instead.
-
4
Sweep the medium-sized brush across the lightest shade of eyeshadow. Tap the brush to remove excess powder. Run the brush from the lash line to the brow. Repeat as necessary to build color.
-
5
Dip the contour brush in the next-darkest shade, and run it across the inside crease of the eyelid. Once you've applied the shadow, use the brush to smudge any harsh-looking lines.
-
6
Take the medium brush and dip it in the accent color, the darkest of your three eye shadow colors. Apply shadow to the outer edge of the eye, making sure to blend toward the middle.
-
7
Check your eyeshadow in direct sunlight if possible. Use the tip of your fingertip to diffuse areas with heavy shadow, or use the medium brush to soften any harsh lines.
-
8
Using a large powder brush, lightly dust the eyelid to set your shadow and to create a natural look.

Tips & Warnings
Select an eyeshadow with a light shimmer to brighten up dark eyes.
Some experts suggest you replace eyeshadow every 6 months, but you can go as long as a couple of years. Toss out shadows if they've got grease marks or if they smell.
Don't share makeup brushes with anyone. If you try on shadow at the cosmetics counter, use a cotton ball, cotton swab or disposable brush.
