How to Make Makeup Brushes Last
Nothing provides better coverage or helps you create dramatic looks quite like a makeup brush. Quality makeup brushes aren't cheap, but they're worth every penny. A complete brush collection should include an eyebrow defining brush and comb, an eye shadow brush, a large powder brush and a thin eyeliner brush. Many women prefer to apply foundation and lipstick with brushes as well. Brush maintenance is key to getting the most out of whatever brushes you use. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Buy quality makeup brushes for longer use. Look for all-natural brushes made of goat, squirrel and sable hair. They may cost more, but they'll last for years if you take care of them.
-
2
Expand your brush collection. If you're using the same four brushes for everything, they're going to wear out faster than if you use several different brushes. Pick up another eye shadow brush and designate one for light colors and the other for dark shades. Pick up a blush brush and use it instead of your powder brush.

Wash your brushes every couple of weeks. Pick up a specially formulated brush wash from the cosmetics counter or make do with baby shampoo. After washing, let the water run over the brush until it's clear, making sure all traces of foundation, blush and eye shadow are gone. Squeeze out excess water and reshape the brush. Pat brushes down with a cotton towel, and lay them on a flat surface to dry. Let them sit at least a couple of hours before using.
-
4
Make brushes last by protecting them from sunlight, dust and other elements. Store brushes in a roll-up bag with separate slots for each brush. Avoid bags with zippers, as bristles may get caught in them. Every 6 months or so, take all of your brushes out of the bag and wash out the bag with soap and water.
-
5
Toss out old makeup. Using dirty makeup wears brushes down and may also spread bacteria to your face. Toss out anything that smells, and get rid of anything you've had for more than 3 years. As a general rule, foundation should last for about 1 year, while eye shadow and blush should last as long as 3 years.

Tips & Warnings
Don't stand newly washed makeup brushes upright to dry. This may cause uneven drying and may make the brush barrel bloat due to excess moisture.
Don't let brushes soak overnight. Doing so breaks down the hair and may lead to mold.
Don't share brushes, especially if they're being used on the lip or eye area.
