Fotofacial treatments (also known as photo facial or intense pulse light therapy) refer to a cosmetic surgery procedure used to treat many facial problems, from those caused by aging (fine wrinkles and sun spots) to scars. Some surgeons are also using fotofacial treatments to treat large pores, although this practice is controversial because the size of pores cannot be actually changed.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Prepare for the procedure well in advance. While the treatment itself is quick (30 minutes) and painless, you will more than likely have to prepare the skin in advance by avoiding sun exposure, using special gels and creams and avoiding certain products and medications.

  2. Step 2

Talk to your doctor before you make the final decision to have the procedure. Deep wrinkles, serious scarring and other problems don't respond well to fotofacial treatments. Also, some people should not have this done, especially those with diabetes and those who have trouble healing well or responding to burns and discomfort.

  3. Step 3

Look for a doctor who uses the newest models of non-ablative lasers, which cause no surface damage and reduce the risk of burns and complications. Regular lasers are more painful and cannot be used with all patients.

  4. Step 4

Find out exactly what the procedure entails. Usually, you will be required to visit your doctor's office for about 1 hour, and you will spend approximately half that time on the table actually receiving treatment. During the procedure, a laser is used to emit flashes of light on the damaged areas, allowing your own body to produce collagen to fill in lines.

  5. Step 5

Be ready to have the procedure repeated at least four times, usually at 3-week intervals. The frequency and length of treatments will depend on how extensive the damage is, but most people cannot get a complete result after just one visit.

Tips & Warnings
  • Fotofacial treatments are expensive. Before you have the procedure done, make sure that you can afford all of the necessary sessions. Stopping midway may result in mixed results and end up being a waste of time and money.
  • Pregnant women should not have this procedure done, even if they have dark spots on their faces. These spots are usually caused by a fluctuation in hormonal levels and they often disappear after the baby is born.
  • Don't expect immediate results. While other types of cosmetic surgery may produce dramatic changes immediately, fotofacial treatments usually improve the skin over time, especially if the patient avoids sun exposure after the treatment.
