Things You'll Need:
- Esthetician or dermatologist
-
Step 1
Find a spa or doctor offering microdermabrasion. There are different types of microdermabrasion machines, and the stronger ones require a licensed medical professional to operate them. If your hyperpigmentation is a little more than mild, you may want to opt for the more powerful medical-grade microdermabrasion.
-
Step 2
Have a consultation to determine whether you are a good candidate for the procedure. People who are prone to keloids, those with oral-herpes outbreaks and people with active rosacea and other ailments may be turned down for the procedure. In these cases, the risks outweigh the potential rewards.
-
Step 3
Get the microdermabrasion treatment. Anesthetic is not usually required for this treatment, but the procedure may be slightly uncomfortable. It usually takes less than 30 minutes to treat hyperpigmentation, though it may take longer if areas besides the face are treated as well.
-
Step 4
Get a series of procedures to treat the hyperpigmentation sufficiently. Usually four to eight treatments, once every couple of weeks, is recommended. Most people see some results after just a couple of treatments, but you should see the series through for best results.
-
Step 5
Schedule touch-up treatments every 1 to 3 months. Microdermabrasion doesn't just treat hyperpigmentation. It also cleans out your pores and keeps your skin looking healthy and youthful, so regular maintenance treatments are suggested.
