Mild cases of hyperpigmentation, or dark skin spots, can be treated with microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion virtually sandblasts the face using one of a variety of abrasive granules, like baking soda. Dead cells from the top layer of the skin are removed in the process. Microdermabrasion also promotes new cell growth in the dermis and stimulates collagen. The result is smoother skin.

Things You'll Need:

  • Esthetician or dermatologist
  1. Step 1

Find a spa or doctor offering microdermabrasion. There are different types of microdermabrasion machines, and the stronger ones require a licensed medical professional to operate them. If your hyperpigmentation is a little more than mild, you may want to opt for the more powerful medical-grade microdermabrasion.

  2. Step 2

Have a consultation to determine whether you are a good candidate for the procedure. People who are prone to keloids, those with oral-herpes outbreaks and people with active rosacea and other ailments may be turned down for the procedure. In these cases, the risks outweigh the potential rewards.

  3. Step 3

Get the microdermabrasion treatment. Anesthetic is not usually required for this treatment, but the procedure may be slightly uncomfortable. It usually takes less than 30 minutes to treat hyperpigmentation, though it may take longer if areas besides the face are treated as well.

  4. Step 4

Get a series of procedures to treat the hyperpigmentation sufficiently. Usually four to eight treatments, once every couple of weeks, is recommended. Most people see some results after just a couple of treatments, but you should see the series through for best results.

  5. Step 5

Schedule touch-up treatments every 1 to 3 months. Microdermabrasion doesn't just treat hyperpigmentation. It also cleans out your pores and keeps your skin looking healthy and youthful, so regular maintenance treatments are suggested.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you plan on getting a series of treatments, ask about a package deal. By buying bulk, you can save on each treatment.
  • Watch out for overcharging. Ask what type of machine a spa uses when you book the appointment and look up the price of that machine. If the machine only costs a couple of thousand dollars, it doesn't make sense for you to be charged a couple of hundred dollars for one use.
  • Stay out of the sun for a good week after your microdermabrasion treatment. When you go back into the sun, always wear sunscreen to prevent more hyperpigmentation and sun damage.
  • Don't put on a makeup foundation for 24 hours after your procedure.
