While it seems backwards to add product to hair for softness, that is only because you have been using the wrong products or aren't thinking outside the box. To create soft, luxurious hair, all of your products should work together to achieve the final look.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Moisturizing shampoo and conditioner
  • Leave-in conditioner
  • Deep conditioning treatment
  • Finishing spray
  1. Step 1

Start with the right shampoo. As a cleanser, shampoo is one of the harshest products you put into your hair. Unless you have oily hair, your shampoo should add moisture and body. Use specially formulated shampoos for chemically treated hair. Shampoo daily or every other day, depending on your hair type.

  2. Step 2

Use a daily conditioner that hydrates your hair and works with your hair type. Conditioners provide the basis for softness, so choose one that is formulated for curly, color-treated, oily or whatever your hair may be.

  3. Step 3

Try a leave-in conditioner to add extra softness and manageability. The leave-in conditioner makes your hair easier to comb through. Tangle-free hair is key to soft hair, but you don't want to overdo the leave-in products. Your hair should not look greasy.

  4. Step 4

Consider a weekly hair mask or deep conditioner to add additional moisture to dry hair. If you don't have oily hair, the extra conditioner will create softness. With curly hair, you may be killing the curl if you over-condition.

  5. Step 5

Use styling products that add moisture and control without any hold. Almost any sculpting product will change the texture of your hair. To create softness, stick to serums and creams lightly worked through your hair.

  6. Step 6

Spritz your hair with a finishing spray to add moisture and shine to your hair. Most of these sprays are light enough to spray on your hair throughout the day to control frizz and dry hair. You can also spray a bit of water on a style to reactivate the products.

Tips & Warnings
  • Softness and shine seem to go hand in hand, so use shine-enhancing products to add a soft texture. Avoid overusing products that add shine, though, or your hair will look greasy.
  • Brush your hair regularly to make it soft and add shine. Of course, this isn't practical with extremely curly hair, but makes straight hair soft and sleek.
  • Avoid overstyling. The more you style your hair, the dryer it appears. For a nice, soft look, keep things simple, avoiding the use of too many products.
