Things You'll Need:
- Swatch of shorts fabric
- Needle
- Thread
-
Step 1
Look for small plastic buttons which match the color of your spring shorts to add an almost invisible closure to your garment. These coordinating buttons will blend into the overall design of your shorts.
-
Step 2
Make a bold statement by choosing oversized buttons in contrasting colors or designs for your shorts. Be sure that your waistband and buttonhole can accommodate a larger size button before purchasing them.
-
Step 3
Choose a more customized look when you select fabric-covered buttons for your spring shorts. Whether covered with the fabric of the shorts or a complementary material, these buttons are also fairly easy to make on your own.
-
Step 4
Add a touch of whimsy to kid's spring shorts when you choose buttons in novelty shapes such as animals or stars. These plastic buttons also make excellent accessories for snapped waistbands.
-
Step 5
Pick up painted porcelain buttons at your local antique shop to add history to your shorts. These buttons are often considered collectibles, so you might even consider this notion an investment.
-
Step 1
Choose a round, plastic button. Typically buttons should be only slightly larger than their corresponding buttonhole.
-
Step 2
Cut a piece of matching or complementary fabric in a circle that is about 1/8 to 1/4 inch larger than the button all around.
-
Step 3
Run basting and gathering stitches about 1/8 inch apart by hand all around the edge of the fabric. The basting stitch will help stabilize the fabric as you gather it onto the button.
-
Step 4
Place the uncovered button in the center of the fabric, with both the fabric and the button face down on your work table.
-
Step 5
Gather the fabric around the button, holding onto one end of the gathering thread as you pull on the other.
-
Step 6
Stitch the gathered fabric in place on the back of the button.
-
Step 7
Sew the button to your shorts, using a smaller flat button to anchor it in place on the wrong side of the waistband.
