How to Register for the SATs

In order to sit for the SATs, you will need to register in advance. The registration process is relatively simple, especially if you sign up online. Your high-school counselor should be able to help you if you have problems during the process.

Instructions

  1. Handle Registration Tasks

    • 1

Create an online account on the College Board website to register online for the SAT (see Resources below). The College Board recommends online registration, although registration by mail is available as well.

    • 2

Receive your admission ticket to confirm your registration for the SATs. You can receive your ticket online if you registered through the College Board website, but your ticket will be mailed to you if you mailed in your registration.

    Make Special Requests

    • 3

Choose your preferred test date and location for the SATs. Be aware that you may not receive your first choice for location if it has already been filled.

    • 4

Request special accommodations for disabilities by completing an eligibility form. Forms are available from your high-school counselor. Submit the form in the spring, before your first SAT-test date if possible, allowing enough time for processing.

    • 5

Request a Sunday test if you cannot take the SAT on Saturday for religious reasons. You must register by mail if you are requesting a Sunday test and submit a letter from your rabbi, minister or religious leader.

    • 6

Ask for a test location closer to your home if you live more than 75 miles from the nearest test center. You must register by mail if you are requesting a special testing center.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take advantage of the fact that you can take the SAT multiple times. If you feel that you did not perform to your best ability, test again.

  • If you are not able to afford the SAT-test fee, request a fee waiver through your high-school counselor. You will need to demonstrate eligibility.

  • To make changes to your SAT-test date or location after you have registered, call the SAT customer service line and have the credit card that you used to register at hand.

  • Don't miss registration deadlines. Registration for each test date ends approximately 1 month before the test. There is a short late-registration period, but you will be charged an additional fee if you register then.

  • Avoid missing your test date, as most test fees are not refundable. However, if you do miss your test date, you may be able to register for another date without paying the entire registration fee.
