Tanning lotions have become much more sophisticated in recent years, especially with the advent of sunless tanning products and more effective sunscreens. Finding the right tanning lotion will depend upon whether you choose to tan in the sun, in a tanning bed, or completely out of the way of potentially harmful ultraviolet rays.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a tanning lotion that contains a sunscreen if you are planning to tan outdoors as opposed to in a tanning bed or booth. Since the UV rays emitted by tanning equipment can differ from the UV rays that come from the sun, it's important to select a tanning lotion that has an SPF rating that reflects this.

  2. Step 2

Select a tanning lotion that has been formulated for use in tanning beds or booths. Generally, this is noted by the phrase "broad-spectrum protection." This indicates that the lotion may contain additional ingredients that protect against UVA light, which is found in tanning equipment, as opposed to UVB rays, which are found in natural sunlight.

  3. Step 3

Pick a tanning lotion that contains specific ingredients that can accelerate the tanning process, without increasing the health risks caused by ultraviolet rays. Some lotions contain vitamin A and beta-carotene, which can naturally duplicate the benefits humans get from sunlight, creating a more natural and consistent tan. These types of lotions should be used when tanning in beds and booths.

  4. Step 4

Use a sunless tanner to achieve a bronzed, healthy skin tone without subjecting yourself to potentially harmful UVA or UVB rays. These tanning lotions should be applied lightly and sparingly at first, with additional layers applied only after a pleasing and natural tone appears.

  5. Step 5

Find a tanning lotion that is long lasting and doesn't melt away if you perspire too much under the hot sun. A tanning lotion that contains moisturizers may be thicker and less prone to evaporating under direct sunlight. A long-lasting tanning lotion will also save you money, since you won't have to apply it so often.

  6. Step 6

Look for tanning lotions that are rated for the level and darkness of tan that you desire. Most lotions are designed to provide varying shades of darkness, from a slight, brown tint to a deep, profound bronze. You can also select a tanning lotion that makes your skin tingle because of ingredients that open the pores for even darker results.

Tips & Warnings
  • Moisturize your skin with a glycerin-based lotion or cream before you apply a tanning lotion and after you have been exposed to sunlight or tanning lamps.
