Microdermabrasion uses rough materials to remove the top layer of dead skin cells and can help with lots of minor skin problems. You can use this simple treatment to remove minor acne scars, although some people may need more intensive macrodermabrasion therapy.

From Quick Guide: Treat Blemishes
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

See your dermatologist for an evaluation of your treatment options for acne scars. Microdermabrasion sessions can be scheduled with your doctor or with a large day spa facility. Expect to spend no more than 30 minutes at the office or spa during each appointment, since the treated surface area on your body is fairly small.

  2. Step 2

Relax while the doctor or spa worker moves the microdermabrasion equipment over your acne scars. Prepare yourself for a gentle vacuum sensation from the tools as they suck away the removed skin cells and abrasive crystals. You may feel a warm sensation during some procedures, but it is not painful.

  3. Step 3

Apply a gentle moisturizer to your skin after the treatment to help prevent complications from dry skin. Ask your doctor to specify how long you need to avoid makeup and other skin products. Use sunscreen to protect your temporarily sensitive skin from burns.

  4. Step 4

Return for microdermabrasion treatment every week for 1 to 2 months to help remove large acne scars. Depending on the success of this procedure, you may need to have light surgery to remove scar tissue around your acne scars or apply a vitamin cream to help your skin heal. If you're responding well to treatment, ask the doctor to use a higher setting to help correct deep skin issues.

  5. Step 5

Use a home microdermabrasion kit to continue clearing up your complexion. Work with these kits only after you've had professional treatment, since they can be less effective on their own. Ask your doctor if she recommends certain brands and look for products that use a massage tool and not just lotion.

  6. Step 6

Combine microdermabrasion with another treatment, such as topical medication to promote collagen production. Try to use cover-up makeup as a cheap way to help hide acne scars during the microdermabrasion treatment period.

Tips & Warnings
  • Macrodermabrasion, which uses larger crystals to penetrate deeper into your skin, may be a better option if you have very dark acne scars.
  • Buying microdermabrasion sessions at a spa in sets of 10 can sometimes help you control the cost of the procedure.
  • Doctors often have the highest prices for microdermabrasion, and cosmetic procedures aren't covered by most health insurance providers. Licensed cosmeticians can do the procedure.
