How to Make Conversation on a First Date

On a first date, there's always a lot going through your head: does she like me? Am I sitting too close? Am I funny enough? How's my breath? Sometimes, however, we get so wrapped up in how we look we forget all about how we sound! It's important when on a first date to relax, have a good time and be yourself, but it's also important to make great, engaging conversation.

Relax. This is certainly easier said than done for some, but being nervous and unsure will read as a lack of confidence. Just take a deep breath and remember you're there to meet someone special and have a good time!

    • 2

Begin with simpler conversation topics by asking direct questions. For example, make it a point to ask if your date has a pet. You can also ask if they love animals, or you can switch gears altogether and ask if they love to travel or where they grew up (or whatever else you haven't talked about yet).

    • 3

String a series of questions together, based on the answers your date gives. For example, in step 2 you asked if he or she has a pet. If they answered yes then you can ask what kind, how old the pet is, where they take it for fun, and so forth. If they answered no, you can ask the reason or if they want one. In other words, even a "no" to a question doesn't mean the death of the conversation.

    • 4

Keep conversation positive. Always talk about happy or upbeat things on a first date. Most people are not willing or comfortable sharing their deepest thoughts on a first date, so keep it light unless they change the conversation to a heavier topic.

    • 5

Make eye contact! Don't stare or gawk, and certainly don't let your eyes conspicuously wander over your date appraisingly. Making eye contact helps give you an air of confidence, and makes you appear friendly and approachable.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be yourself. It sounds cliché, but it consistently proves one of the most important aspects of making conversation on a first date. When you are trying too hard, it reads to the other person as such, and if you're pretending to be something you're not, eventually the real you will surface.

  • Do not be lewd or vulgar on a first date. This is easily one of the best ways to make your date uncomfortable and turn him or her off to further conversation. If you're in doubt about your date's limits, just ask!

  • Avoid talking about previous dates. No one wants to hear about how other dates have gone, especially on a first date!
