Step 1
Start shopping early to avoid the prom rush at most tuxedo shops. Since any tux you buy will need to be fitted and tailored, you will be competing with both renters and other purchases for the tailor's attention.
-
Step 2
Pick a lightweight fabric for a spring time prom. Avoid heavy wool tuxedos that will be too warm to wear indoors for a long period of time. Of course, if your prom is outdoors in a cooler environment, you have more leeway with your fabric choices.
-
Step 3
Stick to a black tuxedo if you plan on wearing your new formal wear to other events. Otherwise, a white or gray tux is suitable for a spring time prom.
-
Step 4
Consider a unique tuxedo, such as one with tails, or accessories, like a top hat and cane, for your prom. A prom is really the one formal event where you can truly get away with anything, so have fun!
-
Step 5
Stray from plain black and white with a pastel tuxedo or tuxedo shirt. While your outfit should match your date's gown, don't be afraid to wear that baby blue tux you've always dreamed of. Remember it's your prom too. This may not be the best long-term investment.
-
Step 6
Buy a tux you feel comfortable in at the shop. Check for tightness in the crotch and shoulders, which can grow more uncomfortable as the night goes on. Make sure to sit and walk in the tuxedo to make sure it fits properly.
-
Step 7
Grab a couple of extra ties, vests or cummerbunds to add variety to your formal wardrobe. This lets you change up your tux between different events without spending a fortune.
