How to Buy a Tuxedo Bowtie

Most people never even consider wearing bowties until they put on a tuxedo. Then they usually reach for the bowties that came with their rented sets, but when you buy a tuxedo, you should also buy a bowtie or two to go with it.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide if you want to tie the bowtie yourself or buy one that is already tied. Pre-tied bowties come in clip-on versions, which can only be worn with lay-down collars, or with adjustable straps.

  2. Step 2

Buy a tie and cummerbund set along with your first tuxedo. You may even get a discount for buying a formal wear package. This basic set should be the first of many accessories you buy to change the look of your tuxedo. Happily, bowties rarely look worn, so you can use them with other tuxedos as well.

  3. Step 3

Keep at least one black bowtie on hand for the perfect look at any event. A black bowtie will work with almost any tuxedo at any time. It also always coordinates with your date's gown, no matter what color she's wearing.

  4. Step 4

Pick a fabric. Bowties come in cotton, wool and silk, as well as many blends. This is easily translated into shiny and non-shiny varieties. The bowtie fabric should match your other accessories and tuxedo.

  5. Step 5

Stick to a solid-colored silk bowtie to wear with your tuxedo to formal events where you need to make a strong impression. While stripes and bright colors work for suits, they often look awkward with a tuxedo.

  6. Step 6

Match your bowtie with your vest or cummerbund for a polished look.

  7. Step 7

Go crazy and pick a wild pattern for your bowtie. If you choose this route, your other accessories should be low key. A matching patterned tie and cummerbund set should only be worn to less-formal events.

  8. Step 8

Let the bowtie match the event. Try hearts for a wedding anniversary or dogs for an animal fundraiser. Besides matching the event, the bowtie could also match your profession, a hobby or other interest.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice tying your bowtie before the big event. It takes a bit of practice to get a decent-looking straight tie.
  • You should be able to breathe without straining while wearing the bowtie. Jumping up to the next size tie may make for a more carefree event.
