When buying a tuxedo, many people shy away from picking out matching shoes. However, tuxedo shoes do not need to be the uncomfortable, shiny nightmares that most people fear. Luckily, when you buy your own pair, you have many styles to choose from.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a toe style. Round toes are traditional for formal footwear, while square toes give a contemporary look to your attire. Often times, a square-toed shoe fits more comfortably.

  2. Step 2

Choose patent leather or faux patent leather if you want the shiny look, which is traditional. Real patent leather allows more movement and breathing ability, but faux patent leather shoes are less expensive and can be found in several styles.

  3. Step 3

Consider regular (matte) leather in traditional formal styles or wingtips for less-formal events.

  4. Step 4

Try the shoes on before you buy them. Make sure the shoes are comfortable and you can move easily in them. Since you will not be breaking these shoes in, they should feel perfect from the start.

  5. Step 5

Stick to black (or white with a white tuxedo) unless you are willing to take a risk. Black-and-white shoes add a little flair without losing formality. While the easiest combo-colored shoes to find are wingtips, some designers get more creative. Look for contrast piping or cutouts.

  6. Step 6

Decide if you would like slip ons or laces. Slip ons look more formal, but lace ups may provide a better fit, especially if you have a wide foot. Slip ons may also have extra embellishments, like sashes, to make your shoe stand out more.

  7. Step 7

Buy a shoe with a heel you feel confident walking in. While it may be tempting to add a higher heel so your date doesn't loom over you, remember that you may have to stand and walk around in your tuxedo shoes for many hours.

Tips & Warnings
  • Tuxedo shoes tend to have slippery soles. You can lessen the slide by using sandpaper to mar the bottom of the shoe. This adds just a bit of traction.
  • If the invite calls for black or white tie, you should stick with patent leather, but rules are meant to be broken. A great pair of designer formal shoes will outshine cheap patent ones any day.
  • Tuxedo shoes in colors other than black or white are often hard to find. Try a shoe shop that will dye your shoes to match the tux or shirt you will be wearing.
