How to Buy a Tuxedo Vest

In America, many men tend to choose vests over cummerbunds when wearing tuxedos. A vest works well with a single- or double-breasted suit and looks great even with the jacket off. You should be able to buy a formal vest anywhere that tuxedos are rented or sold.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Coordinate your vest with the rest of your bridal party if you will be wearing this tux for a wedding. The vest should clearly distinguish the groom from the groomsmen, but overall, the dress of the entire wedding party should match.
Step2
Pick a gray vest for morning or daytime events. Usually the tuxedo will also be gray for these types of events.
Step3
Avoid bright colors or patterns for formal events. If the event is more lighthearted, you can find tuxedo vests with patterns and images. This general rule applies to cummerbunds and ties as well.
Step4
Buy a vest with a pique collar for formal evening events. Usually this style of vest should only be worn in white or black. You can also buy a brocade or colored version for less-formal events.
Step5
Choose between a full-back or backless vest. A backless vest may appear less bulky under a jacket, but your jacket should remain on at all times if you are wearing one. Backless vests may have adjustable necks for better sizing.
Step6
Consider an adjustable full-back vest that can be sized in case your weight changes. This is a less-formal option, but the adjustable straps can be hidden by your coat.
Step7
Keep more than one vest in your closet to change up your tuxedo for different events. This lets you look and feel fresh, even if you only own one tux.

Tips & Warnings

  • While a vest can usually be worn to any formal event, it should not be worn with tails. A "white tie" event calls for a tuxedo with tails, bow tie and cummerbund.
  • To add some personality to your tuxedo for a formal event, try buying a fullback vest with a contrasting back, such as checkers or paisley. The hidden bit of "fun" will only be seen when your jacket is removed, usually after the formal part of the evening.
  • Never wear a belt with a tuxedo. Instead, opt for suspenders, which must be worn under the vest.
  • Silk vests may appear cheap or gaudy. You may want to opt for a cotton or wool vest for a more dressy style.
