How to Avoid Being a GHB Victim

GHB is one of the most commonly used drugs in date rape crimes. Available in pills, powders or liquids, GHB can easily be slipped into a victim's food or drink, producing effects similar to binge drinking. Once you've been drugged with GHB, it can be difficult to stay awake or resist unwanted sexual advances. There are several easy steps you can take to avoid being a GHB victim.

Instructions

    • 1

Go on group dates with other couples. Being in a group can make it much more difficult for a would-be date rapist to sneak GHB into your food or drink. Avoid situations that will leave you alone with a date, especially when you're just getting to know him.

    • 2

Discuss your date plans with a friend. Make sure she know where you're going and when she should expect you to return. That way you'll have someone looking out for you should the date take any unexpected turns.

    • 3

Schedule dates that don't involve a lot of eating or drinking, at least until you get to know your date better. A date rapist can easily slip GHB into food or beverages without a victim knowing it. Avoid spending your first date at a bar.

    • 4

Abstain from drinking alcohol on your first few dates. Not only can alcohol lower your inhibition and impair your ability to make sound decisions, but it can also be used to conceal GHB powder or liquid. It can be much harder to spot the symptoms of GHB poisoning if you're already intoxicated.

    • 5

Refuse drinks from strangers. It's best to only accept drinks served to you directly from restaurant or bar staff.

    • 6

Keep an eye on your food and drink. Don't walk away to use the ladies' room or talk to friends, then return to finish a drink.

    • 7

Watch for the warning signs of GHB poisoning. One of the first signs of GHB poisoning is a wave of relaxation. It can be followed by drowsiness, dizziness, or decreased heart rate.

Tips & Warnings

  • In addition to the risks of GHB, do some research into other common date rape drugs, such as Rohypnol and ketamine. Avoid being a date rape victim by educating yourself about different threats.

  • GHB poisoning can be fatal. If you think you may have been given GHB, immediately call a friend or an ambulance.
