How to Plan a Spring Break Trip to Key West

Key West is a tiny island city located in the Florida Keys. Its white beaches and sunny weather have made it a world-renowned travel destination. There are plenty of bars and beaches you should plan on seeing during a spring break trip to Key West.

Travel to Key West

1. Fly into the Key West International Airport. You can also arrive at the Miami International Airport and take a bus or rental car to Key West. The drive will take about four hours.

2. Use the Key West bus system for an inexpensive and safe way to travel between tourist destinations.

3. The KWDoT runs a series of bus and shuttle schedules identified by the colors blue, red, green, purple, gold and orange. Special discounts are available for students and other tips can be found at the KeyWestCity website (see Resources below).

Find the Right Accommodations

4. Stay in one of the many popular beach hotels to stay close to the party scene. Private condos can be rented if you're traveling in a large group for spring break.

5. Stay at one of the numerous bed and breakfasts or historic inns for a more intimate experience during your spring break trip. The KeyWest website is a reliable source of information (see Resources below).

Soak up Some Rays at Key West's Many Beaches

6. Visit the beach at Fort Zachary Taylor. Built at the site of a pre-Civil War army base, Fort Zachary Taylor is one of the island's most popular beaches. Plan on bringing some extra cash, because you'll have to pay an admission fee to reach the beach.

7. Swing by South Beach to avoid the tourist scene. Located on the Atlantic Ocean side of the island, South Beach is more popular with residents. There are no public restrooms.

8. Find some excitement at Smathers Beach. In addition to the regular tourist amenities, Smathers Beach offers sporting activities like volleyball, jet ski rentals and parasailing.

9. Visit Key West's major tourist destinations in Old Town. This western portion of the island is home to Mallory Square and Duval Street, two of the most historic parts of the community. There are plenty of places to eat, drink and be merry in Old Town.

10. Head to New Town for shopping. Located on the island's eastern side, New Town is closest to the airport and major shopping centers. White Street divides New Town and Old Town.

Tips & Warnings

• Rent a bicycle or motor scooter. This can be a fun way to see get around during your spring break trip while avoiding traffic and parking difficulties.
• Some of the national car rental companies don't have offices within the Key West International Airport. Plan on calling for a shuttle bus when you arrive at the airport. The ride is only about 10 minutes.
