How to Spring Clean the Bathroom

The bathroom is a notorious place for germs to grow and thrive. It's also a typical haven for mold, mildew and fungus of all kinds. The damp atmosphere and general lack of proper air circulation in most bathrooms are major contributors to this sorry state of affairs. That's why every bathroom will benefit from a thorough spring cleaning every year. In fact, most bathrooms could stand to be cleaned in this way several times a year.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Remove any rugs or toilet-seat covers from the bathroom when you spring clean and wash them.
Step2
Take down your shower curtain and liner. Wash the shower curtain according to the manufacturer's instructions. Take the plastic liner out into the yard and rinse it off with a hose.
Step3
Clear off your bathroom counters by removing any loose objects. Take everything out of the bathroom cabinets.
Step4
Use a glass cleaner and paper towel to clean bathroom mirrors and windows.
Step5
Clean bathroom counters using a cloth rag and a mild, soapy cleanser. Dry the counters using an old towel.
Step6
Dust the interiors of the bathroom cabinets, including the medicine cabinet. For any tough stains, use soap, water and a small-bristle brush.
Step7
Dust the bathroom's lighting fixtures, door ledges, window sills and fan vents.
Step8
Scrub the bowl of your toilet. When you're done, use a commercial bathroom cleanser and a paper towel or old cloth to wash the exterior surfaces of the toilet.
Step9
Use a bathroom cleanser and a sponge to clean your bathtub. Make sure to scrub hard enough to remove any stains or discolorations.
Step10
Clean your shower stall walls, shower head and water knobs using the appropriate product. This could be either a hard-water stain remover, a mildew remover or a scaler, depending on the particular condition of your shower walls. The goal, in any case, is to remove all stains from the walls.
Step11
Sweep the bathroom floor. When you're done, mop the floor.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your shower-curtain liner has too much mold or mildew on it to be easily removed, it's time to buy a new liner.
  • Avoid fumes. Before you start to spring clean the bathroom, open all the windows. You'll be using a lot of potentially smelly, caustic cleansers, and this will help keep air circulating properly, so you can breathe easier. It will also help keep any strong smells from permeating the rest of the house.
