Instructions

Get Your Window Treatments Squeaky Clean

  1. Step 1

Remove curtains and/or blinds from all windows. Be sure to do so carefully, so as not to damage these potentially delicate window treatments.

  2. Step 2

Dust all of the window sills and the corners of the window frames. Use a slightly damp cloth for this, as traditional feather dusters only move dust around, allowing it to resettle elsewhere. Make sure you get your trusty cloth into any hidden or hard-to-reach areas.

  3. Step 3

Wash the insides and outsides of the glass in your windows. Soap and water is best for this. Dry the glass with crumpled newspaper for a high shine and to avoid streaking.

  4. Step 4

Take down your window screens and give them a good rinse in your yard with a garden hose. Rinse both the fronts and the backs of the screens, taking care to get any tiny particles off before putting them back in the windows.

  5. Step 5

Wash your curtains according to the instructions that came with them. There should be either a tag on the curtains with washing instructions or instructions on the package in which they came. Some curtains can be washed in the washing machine while others will require hand-washing or dry cleaning.

  6. Step 6

Dust the blinds with a damp cloth.

  7. Step 7

Put the curtains and blinds back on the windows once they are washed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Run a vacuum over your curtains before washing them. This will pre-clean them by removing any dust or hair particles. It's a good idea to do this outside, so as not to send dust flying through the house.
  • If your house has an upstairs, be very careful when removing window screens to clean them. You don't want to fall out the window. Also, if you have pets or children, keep the windows closed and locked as long as the screens are removed.
  • Be as gentle and delicate as possible when you clean the glass on your windows. It's easier than you think to break window glass.
