Breathing is easy. You inhale. You exhale. You take it for granted. You can easily do it in your sleep. You can do it without thinking. What you don't realize is that if you don't take precautions to make breathing a part of your lifestyle, you may end up having to fight to breathe, eventually needing assistance through breathing machines and medications. Read on to learn some ideas as to how to make breathing a part of your lifestyle which in the long-run will save you years of illness and frustration.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Quit Smoking. Avoid tobacco smoke at all costs. The only way to eliminate or slow the progression of breathing disorders such as bronchitis, pneumonia, emphysema, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and asthma is to stop smoking and to avoid second hand smoke.

  2. Step 2

Exercise helps strengthen your body. When your body is in better shape, you may be more active with less shortness of breath.

  3. Step 3

Nutrition. Eating healthy foods may help you stay strong. If you are overweight you are putting a strain on your heart and lungs. This makes it harder to breathe. If you are underweight, you may have less energy and your body may be less capable of fighting off infection and disease.

  4. Step 4

Avoid Triggers. When possible, avoid conditions that make breathing difficult. You may find that hot, humid weather makes it harder to breathe, while others have a hard time breathing when it is cold.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have any concerns always discuss them with your doctor because it is long term maintenance that can make a big difference if you are in a Trigger Point environment throughout most of your waking hours.
  • If you have a breathing disorder remember that taking medications is a big part of helping you to breathe easier.
