So you're wondering whether the person you met was born between July 23 to August 22, making them a Sun sign Leo, or just someone who was born when Leo was rising at the time and place of their birth.

What's the difference? you ask. Well, for those of us who are into astrology, there is a difference! Someone with the Sun in Leo was born during a certain time of the MONTH when the Sun was in the said sign, while someone with a Leo Ascendant (or Leo rising, as we also say) may or may not be born at that time of the month assigned to Leo but he/she must be born at a certain time of day when the constellation of Leo was rising on the horizon at the place of his/her birth!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a working knowledge of astrology
  • your powers of observation
  • self-confidence (Leos respond to that!)... but also,
  • be prepared to kowtow to the King or Queen! :)
  1. Step 1

Look for the regal bearing. You don't see the regular cookie-cutter Sun sign Leo slouching or slinking away in a corner. Hear that Lion roar, see that Lion preen and groom indeed! Watch them quietly command everybody's attention with noblesse oblige. He or she is one beautiful cat and don't they know it! You should be thankful to be in their presence, you peasant! :)

  2. Step 2

In contrast, a Leo rising is also seeking your attention, but the motivation is different. Whereas the Sun in Leo person preens and struts because he thinks it is his God-given right and a part of his basic inner character anyway to be part of royalty somehow, the Leo rising person displays confidence to project a protective veneer. It is merely a facade that he prefers to show the rest of the world to protect who he really is inside , whatever his real characteristics are. It may or may not be his true nature or basic character at all. In actuality, he may be crabby, sweet, intellectual, cold, et cetera.

  3. Step 3

Know that Leo is a Fire Sign. As such, a person who has the Sun in Leo exhibits a creative flamboyance that borders on the dramatic and theatrical. There is something childlike and playful in their demeanor but hey, don't you once forget to keep your proper distance! Don't get too familiar with them. Remember, you are still in the presence of the King or the Queen. Where they walk is hallowed ground, so to speak. But they are really the coolest, bravest, most generous and loyal friends you can have! Sun sign Leos are great!

  4. Step 4

As a Leo rising myself, let me add a final step to differentiate a Sun sign Leo person from someone with Leo rising: whereas Leo Suns take pride of personality to a higher level, Leo rising people are much more mellow when it comes to promoting themselves. It boils down to a matter of degree of intensity, I guess, unless the person has both the Sun and Ascendant in Leo, which is really already stacking the deck. Otherwise, a word to the wise: in general (and there are exceptions, take note!), the Sun in a sign seems to exert a more powerful influence than a sign that happens to be rising on the horizon at the time and place of one's birth.
After all, it is THE SUN, the giver of life itself, and it is the natural ruler of LEO! So the Sun in Leo is really an exalted position for the Sun to be in. It is where the Sun achieves its highest expression. Hail to the Sun in Leo!

on 4/15/2009 My comment is directed at Gloriajones: please make sure your astrological sources are accurate...from your responses you are yet to truly understand astrology and therefore, posting erroneous interpretations can be misleading for those who don't know astrology.

on 4/15/2009 I most definitely disagree with your interpretation of a Leo Rising Personality and the significance of a Sun Sign in one's astrological chart. You stated that people with Leo Rising use their rising to hide who they really therefore it serves a purpose of covering up one's true self. You are wrong in this assumption . VERY.I am a Leo Rising and let me tell you , there is no part of my Leo characteristics that is a facade. Also , one's Sun sign is really not as significant as one's Rising sun. As a matter of fact, one's rising is much more who a person is than their sun sign. Most great astrologers will tell you this .
