How to Change and Customize Joomla Templates

Joomla templates are both a bane and a boon. Joomla templates are what you will use to plan and design the layout of your Joomla website. They are a bane because they may limit your web design options. On the other hand, you need little or even zero knowledge of PHP or HTML to create and manage a dynamic, powerful website.

When you install Joomla, it comes standard with at least two default templates. These can be found under the templates manager. To get a preview of each template, hover your mouse cursor over its name.

You have the option of installing a different template altogether, or you may change or customize the default template. To switch to a different template, you simply click on its radio button and then click on the default button in the menu bar.

There are countless Joomla templates available online. Some of these templates are free, some commercial. (See Resources below for links to Joomla templates). Read on to learn more.

    Search through the numerous available Joomla templates, and download one that suits your needs. This download will be a compressed zip file. Save the template to a specific folder.

    Next, log in to the administrator panel of your Joomla website. Click on the link for the Installer’s menu.

    Click on the Templates-Site option. Click Browse on the page that opens up.

  4. Step 4
     

    Select the Joomla installation file that you had downloaded. Next, click on the Upload and install button, and then click Continue. This brings you to the Templates Manager. Select the radio button of your new template.

  5. Step 5
     

    Next click Default, which will make this template the default design for your Joomla website. And you’re done!

Tips & Warnings
  • You can change the template for your Joomla website at any time. Just go to the Templates manager and click on the radio button for the template you want. Next, click on the default button.
