    How to Play Dice Chess

  1. Step 1

    In Dice Chess every type of chess piece is assigned a number on the die:

    Pawn = 1
    Knight = 2
    Bishop = 3
    Rook = 4
    Queen = 5
    King = 6

  2. Step 2

    Set up the board as you would in regular chess. Roll to see who goes first. The high roller chooses white or black and rolls.

  3. Step 3

    In Dice Chess you are only allowed to move a free piece. So the roller must either roll a 1 (pawn) or a 2 (knight) to move. If he does not roll either of these numbers, he must pass the die to his opponent who then takes a turn.

  4. Step 4

    The only other additional rule is that, if possible, you must move the piece whose number you rolled. For example, if you roll a 6, you must move your king if you can--even if that move would make a checkmate.

  5. Step 5

    Each game takes only a few minutes. Therefore, it's best to play a best of three or a best of five series.

Tips & Warnings
  • Castling is still possible. You must be set up to castle and roll a 6.
  • This is a great game for tournaments and parties.
