Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- A sense of humor
- A sense of self
Step1
Ask yourself why you want to do comedy. If you like telling jokes, maybe stand up is for you. If you like writing, maybe sketch is your forte.
Step2
Read some books on the different forms of comedy. This will allow you to get a sense of what each form of the art has to offer. Improvisation might be too theatrical for you, while sketch might be too intellectual.
Step3
Go see live comedy. Not only with this give you exposure to the different incarnations of the art, but you can talk to performers afterward to get some insight as to what's right for you.
Step4
Try a little of every form of comedy. Write a short stand up set and go to an open mic. Try writing a sketch and attend a writer's group to get feedback. See if there's an open improv jam in your area and sign up for a night.
Step5
Once you've had a taste of everything, you probably will have a sense of what you want to pursue most. You may want to pursue more than one form. That's fine, too. Now just go out there and make them laugh.
