After the holidays there are many cartons of eggs left in the fridge. How do you tell which ones are old, and which ones are safe to use?

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bowl
  • Water
  1. Step 1

When an egg ages it develops a degree of buoyancy as the egg loses moisture. Egg shells are porous and moisture will go through the shell.

    To begin:
Fill a large bowl about 3/4 full with cold water. Drop an egg in!

  2. Step 2

If the egg goes to the bottom and lies on its side it is fresh.

  3. Step 3

If the egg stays on the bottom at a 45 angle it is about 3-5 days old.

  4. Step 4

If it stays on the bottom and stands up at a 90 angle it is about 10-12 days old.

  5. Step 5

If it floats to the top it is bad and should not be opened in the house.

Tips & Warnings
  • Eggs should be stored with the tapered end down!
