There's not a lot of love for improvisers. Sure, there's countless venues for musicians and galleries for artists. But when it comes to improv comedy, unless you're out in New York, Los Angeles or Chicago, you might find it difficult to find a place to play. Read on to learn how to find venues to perform improvisational comedy.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Phone
  • Phone book or Internet access
  • Good networking skills
  • An improv team
  • Video camera
  1. Step 1

Given that you already have an improv team put together, the first thing you can do to better your chances getting some stage time is to record a performance. Even if it is just a rehearsal, it's good to have something to show to booking agents.

  2. Step 2

Next, hit up any venue you know of that already hosts improv performers. They will be the most likely to let your group perform. Call them up and ask what their criteria is for getting a booking.

  3. Step 3

Next, try venues that might be more open to hosting an improv show. Coffee shops, theaters, music venues and even some bars welcome live entertainment. A quick search in the phone book or the Internet should help you get a grasp on all the potential venues in your area.

  4. Step 4

If at first you don't succeed, continue trying. Be nice to everyone you talk to. You never know when they might be able to help you find a place to perform.

Tips & Warnings
  • If all else fails, you could always try to host a show in one of your member's apartments or houses.
  • Don't be shy about asking friends, family or strangers for leads on where to perform. You never know when it might lead you to an opportunity.
  • Don't expect to get paid for performing. Few and far between are the improvisers who get paid for their work.
